Founded in 2020 by husband and wife duo David and Roz Spencer, Edinburgh Mercantile is a small family business based in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge neighbourhood.
David and Roz developed Edinburgh Mercantile using expertise they built during their long-established buying careers with a large young fashion retailer. The duo wished to spend more time at home in Edinburgh with their family, so explored ways to create a small business that blended their shared passions for product and interiors. The goal was to open in the neighbourhood in which they live, hopefully enabling them to be more present for each other. “And we wanted to be able to walk to work everyday,” says David.
With an enthusiastic eye for interiors and a confident knowledge of product and retail, the co-founders work with smaller trusted makers and suppliers, putting an emphasis of practicality on everything they sell. “Genuine and considered products which bring honest design and craftsmanship to the fore are fundamental to us,” the pair say.
In Edinburgh Mercantile, you will find a carefully curated and edited range of items, from wheel-thrown ceramics made by various studio potters to Belgian linen for your table and kitchen. You will also find utility brushes made in the UK, crafted candles and home fragrances alongside writing instruments from Germany, desk tools from Japan, British beeswax candles, traditional Welsh blankets and French cologne. “All of which have stories that we are very happy to share with you.”
David and Roz aren’t just business owners; they source and develop product, oversee the interior design and displays in the shop, process sales and online orders, sweep the floor, manage the website and everything in between. “We make every effort to offer a personal service, which we hope makes for a happy and memorable shopping experience,” they say.
