Inside Sea View House, a luxurious 20th-century cottage on Harris

We speak to the owners of one of Harris’ loveliest luxury holiday cottages, perched on the coast overlooking the Sound of Harris, Skye and North Uist

Sea View House is a design-led, luxury 100-year-old cottage on the Isle of Harris that blends modern and mid-century interiors with astounding sea views. It has been lovingly restored with a sympathetic structural renovation that now offers a spacious, open plan, light-filled layout set against the backdrop of panoramic views across the Sound of Harris to Skye and North Uist.

“The cottage is full of original features: exposed wooden beams, stone walls, antique wood burners and beautiful bespoke joinery and ceramics, combined with the best modern facilities including large windows to take in the view and a bespoke copper bath to soak away the day’s activities,” say the owners, who launched Sea View House in April of 2022.

They continue: “The blend of contemporary elegance, rustic charm and artistic character is enhanced by stunning hand-painted wall murals reflecting the character, landscape and wildlife of Harris and the Outer Hebrides, with carefully chosen antiques, luxurious textiles, handmade rugs and original artwork.”

Connection to the land

The owners have been regular visitors to Harris for many years and fell in love with its beauty, local people and culture. “When the rare opportunity arose to buy a 100-year-old stone cottage with stunning views in South Harris, it felt like the perfect opportunity to spend more time there,” they explain.

The Hebrides are one of the last unspoilt wild places in Scotland with pristine beaches like Luskentyre, beautiful mountain scenery and amazing wildlife on the doorstep. “It offers a truly unique experience to get away from it all.”

The design and decorating process took approximately six months ahead of opening. All of the interiors were personally designed and chosen by the owners using antiques, furniture and art from their own collection so that the interiors have a carefully curated look reflecting the owners’ eclectic and well-travelled style.

The owners are seasoned travellers and wanted to incorporate the best of the travel experiences they had into Sea View House. This has resulted in an eclectic and colourful mix of schemes that speak to design, relaxation and restoration. This is your place to switch off and escape from your hectic day-to-day life.

Bold design transforms the bathroom into the wellness centre of the house

The master suite occupies the entire top floor of the cottage, with soothing sea colours and a beautiful artwork that cocoons visitors. “Guests love the master bathroom and its hand-painted waterlily floor. The walls of Harris flowers provide a visual feast in a spa-like setting,” say the owners.

The centrepiece of the space is an oversized, freestanding William Holland copper bateau bath. It gives guests the ultimate bathing experience, together with an infrared sauna and a walk-in power shower, decorated with a hand painted mural of underwater Harris.

Sometimes, beautiful design can mean sacrificing comfort — but not at Sea View House. “We constantly seek to improve the guest experience, so the cottage is continually updated and enhanced with new elements to add to the holiday experience.”

Located in South Harris, near Leverburgh, the Uist ferry and boat trips to St.Kilda, Sea View House is a great base to explore The Hebrides as well as the Harris Distillery, AS Apothecary, the Mission House Art studio, local Harris Tweed weavers, the Harris Brewery and many more attractions.

Harris’s dramatic landscapes and spectacular beaches also offer endless opportunities for walking, beachcombing, photography, birdwatching or simply soaking up the Hebridean atmosphere.

The owners paint a picture: “Sea View House is ideal for romantic escapes, family holidays or a restful retreat with friends. With stunning panoramic sea views across the Sound of Harris towards North Uist, and Skye, this traditional Harris stone cottage provides a perfect holiday by the sea, close to the famous beaches of Luskentyre, Scarista, Northton and Hushinish.”

The coastal scenery of Harris is one of the island’s defining qualities — a mix of turquoise water, white sand beaches, remote rugged headlands and shifting Hebridean light that makes every hour look different.

Harris provides the visitor with a blend of unspoilt costal scenery,  mountains, craft traditions, artisans, wildlife and ancient history that creates a uniquely powerful sense of place. “It justifiably attracts visitors from all over the world, who come to adventure and restore themselves by reconnecting with nature,” say the owners. “Sea View House sympathetically sits within its landscape, and the preservation of this 100-year-old traditional Harris Stone cottage will allow it to be enjoyed for generations to come.”
