Handmade timber furniture does justice to a unique kitchen space
Adding a superb modern extension to this traditional Victorian villa in Stirling had a transformative effect on the house, opening it up and filling it with light. But the new interior the space was given has played just as important a role in the property’s new look. Peter Lyon, director and furniture designer at Steven Burgess Furniture & Interiors, who designed and crafted the kitchen that is now the focal point of the home, is justifiably proud of what had been created here. “It’s a stunning room,” he says. “It’s spacious and bright and both practical and great for entertaining.”
The clients had requested a simple, relaxed, light and airy feel to the kitchen. “They also wanted it to have a ‘furniture look’ rather than a fitted-kitchen look,” says Peter. The cabinetmakers at Steven Burgess, the Stirling-based firm that specialises in creating bespoke furniture, are well practised at making kitchens to exacting client specifications.

Brief To design, build and fit a kitchen-dining room in a new extension. The area, which measured 7m x 7m, had a wall of glazing to the garden, with additional natural light coming from roof windows.
Biggest challenge Access: it was difficult to reach the rear of the building. A steel skeletal structure was required for the roof and bifold doors, along with a feasibility study.
Budget £100,000 for the build, plus £40,000 for the kitchen.
