Colour was key at London’s Clerkenwell Design Week

If design shows were a family, Clerkenwell Design Week would be the edgier, slightly cooler younger sibling. Having just wrapped up its seventh edition in May, and drawing ever-larger crowds (almost 35,000 visitors this year), it’s a mere fledgling in comparison to some of the big European shows, but it can hold its own in the areas of new emerging talent and out-there pieces. That’s not to say the big-hitters were missing – a highlight of the week was Tom Dixon’s exhibition ‘The Church’, which saw the designer’s new pieces take centre stage in the nearby St James’s Church. A collaboration with vicar Andrew Baughen, it involved the installation of a large Curve chandelier and the creation of a co-working space and a kitchen, all of which were donated as permanent fixtures once the design week wrapped up.
Highlights from new exhibitors included artist Midula Dey’s punchy prints, shown as part of the ‘We Are the Women’ exhibition, and this bright, fuss-free kitchen from new brand Pluck from design studio 2MZ.
Designs from around the world made an appearance throughout Clerkenwell’s week (exhibitors came from more than 20 countries), but the focus was on the home-grown, with over 150 local businesses involved. If you missed this year’s offering, it’s not too late to pay a visit – Clerkenwell remains a design hub all year round and, although most of the exhibitors and props will have left, there is still plenty to discover.
