Added to the rear of an Edinburgh villa, this bright, brave extension allows 21st-century living within the confines of an 18th-century home
Modern living needs modern solutions. Buildings that functioned perfectly in the past may no longer operate efficiently for their 21st-century inhabitants. But old buildings have beauty and character that many new properties lack, and this makes them worth persevering with. These were the thoughts of the family who own this house, which they bought when they swapped London for Edinburgh.
A large Georgian villa in the Newington district on the south side, it is a typical example of its kind: while it is a handsome building, which has endured in wonderful condition since it was constructed over two hundred years ago, there is no escaping the fact that the way the Georgians lived and arranged their homes doesn’t necessarily tally with our expectations of modern living.
The new owners gave a good deal of thought to what they had particularly liked about their modern London home and decided to try to incorporate some of this into the villa. They loved the details of the city’s characterful terraces, were fans of a mixture of materials and were captivated by a semi-industrial style.
