Karen Rae, hand-sewer

Karen Rae hand sewer at the Knockraich Farm.

Imake curtains and other soft furnishings, most of which are commissioned by private clients. The bulk of our work is repeat business – we often find that if we get in the door with one pair of beautiful handmade curtains, we end up doing the entire house. I work for Katy Rodger Making Interiors at Knockraich Farm. We have a beautiful workroom and a display room to show people what we can do. Our clients really appreciate the quality of our work. Very often they’ll be on their second or third house and we’ll be going back to alter curtains we made for their previous home several years before. Because the curtains are handmade, we can alter them to fit the new windows. You can tell just by touching a fabric how good the quality is. Nearly everything we use is made from natural fibres – wool, silk or cotton. You know they will look good for a long time
