How has your style evolved over the years?
Interiors have always been subject to the fashion of the day. Although never quite as embarrassing as the clothes of the 1970s, there have been elements that are best forgotten.
Theatre, movies and museums have always been big influences but nothing has had more impact than travel in remote places such as Siberia, Nagaland and Scotland.
Who is your design hero?
There are so many heroes – from Phidias and Christopher Wren to David Hicks and Jim Thompson.
What is your favourite building?
I love Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim in Bilbao for its demonstration of the power of design to transform a city. But my favourite is the ultimate treasure house, the British Museum in London.
Describe your dream home
It would be a stilt house in northern Thailand with an elephant in the garden.
Describe the interior style of yours
My London flat, where I have some say, is a reflection of my interests – old books, strange artefacts, tribal textiles, family photographs.
What makes a home?
Homes are made by the personalities of the families who live in them.
