Our main business at Artists Surfaces is picture framing, although we sometimes do big mirrors too. Most of our clients are artists, some are dealers and there’s the occasional member of the public. All our frames are bespoke and literally everything is hand-finished. There’s no comparison with a ready-made frame – they’re just four bits of wood stuck together. Some artists have a clear idea about what they want. Others prefer to try things out and see what they’re like. Sometimes a frame will look quite different when it’s on the wall. We try to advise but it’s up to the artist. One of the most interesting jobs we’ve had recently was to frame two huge pieces of Timorous Beasties wallpaper. The client wanted them to hang in her hall. They looked amazing. It was one of those houses in the west end of Glasgow with the big, big walls – I guess it would have cost a fortune to paper the entire hallway. I
