Opening shot, issue 107

Opening shot To its devotees, fishing makes perfect sense. To everyone else, it’s baffling – all that hanging around on muddy riverbanks, waiting for a bite that might never come. But we’re willing to bet there’ll be a surge of interest in the art of angling, thanks to this award-winning boat house. Known as the Fishing Hut, it was built by the owner of this idyllic lake, which is home to some of the best fly-fishing in the country, to store boats and tackle and to act as a meeting place and shelter for anglers. Its clever design, by Niall McLaughlin Architects, allows it to open on all sides in summer yet close completely in winter. The exterior oak cladding, meanwhile, will weather to silver, but retain its golden hue inside. It has got us hooked…
